The Maldives government suspended three of its ministers- Mariyam Shiuna, Malsha and Hassan Zihan- for their ‘derogatory remarks on India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, following the latter’s Lakshadweep visit.,

The Maldives government on Sunday distanced itself from derogatory remarks made by its minister Mariyam Shiuna against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. in a statement, the government said the ‘opinions are personal and do not represent the views of the Government.The government believes that the freedom of expression should be exercised in a democratic and responsible manner, and in ways that do not spread hatred, negativity, and hinder close relationships between the Maldives and international partners,” the government statement added.

The Maldives is India’s key maritime neighbour in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) and occupies a special place in its initiatives like ‘SAGAR’ (Security and Growth for All in the Region) and the ‘Neighbourhood First Policy’ of the Modi government. “The relevant authorities of the government will not hesitate to take action against those who make such derogatory remarks,” the statement added. In December last year, the Maldives said it would not renew the Hydrographic Survey agreement made with India, a Maldives-based news website, The Press, reported.

The statement from Maldives govt came after India made it known that the statement of the junior lady minister was totally uncalled for and unacceptable. The unsavoury comment by the junior minister came when Maldivian president Mohammad Muizzu has gone to seek funds from Beijing.

After making fund seeking trip to Turkey and UAE, Muizzu left for China on January 6 and is expected to return on January 10. The derogatory statement used by the junior lady minister is reflective of the pro-Hamas sentiments of the Muizzu government and is a polarising build-up to the Majlis election in April.

The remarks by Mariyam Shiuna were not taken well by in the domestic political circles of Maldives with former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih condemning the “hateful” language used against India. “I condemn the use of hateful language against India by Maldivian government officials on social media. India has always been a good friend to Maldives and we must not allow such callous remarks to negatively impact the age-old friendship between our two countries…” Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said.

The newly-elected government of Mohammad Muizzu distanced itself from the remarks of its minister on Sunday and said the relevant authorities “will not hesitate to take action against those who make such derogatory remarks.”
